Muay Thai Training: Physical Capability for Knowledge Workers

On January 14, 2026, the NS Gym hosted our dedicated Muay Thai training session. Unlike our combined martial arts class, this session focused exclusively on the Art of Eight Limbs, allowing for deeper technique development.

The Case for Physical Training

For entrepreneurs and knowledge workers, it's easy to neglect the body in pursuit of mental work. But physical capability directly supports mental performance:

  • Energy levels - Regular training increases baseline energy
  • Stress management - Physical exertion is one of the best stress relievers
  • Confidence - Knowing you can handle yourself physically translates to all areas
  • Discipline - Showing up for hard training builds the discipline muscle

Your Instructor

The session was led by Konrad, who has trained Muay Thai for over two years across four countries: Thailand (where the art originated), San Francisco, Vietnam, and Bali. With additional background in Taekwondo and Kung Fu, he brings a well-rounded perspective to striking arts.

The Training Agenda

The one-hour session covered the fundamentals of Muay Thai:

Introduction and Breathing (5 minutes)

Understanding the philosophy of Muay Thai and the importance of breath control in martial arts.

Stretching and Cardio (7 minutes)

Warming up the body and preparing for explosive movement.

Jump Rope (7 minutes)

A staple of Muay Thai training that builds footwork, timing, and cardio simultaneously.

Core and Strength (6 minutes)

Sit-ups and push-ups to build the foundation that powers strikes.

Shadow Boxing (5 minutes)

Practicing movement and combinations without equipment, developing fluidity.

Heavy Bag Work (12 minutes)

Three rounds of three minutes each, with one-minute rest periods. This is where technique meets power.

Combination Drills (8 minutes)

Learning and drilling the basic combinations: jabs, kicks, and hooks.

Technique Rounds (8 minutes)

Focused practice on specific techniques with attention to form.

Traditional Closing (2 minutes)

Honoring the tradition of Muay Thai with a proper closing ceremony.

What You Need

The barrier to entry is low:

  • Comfortable gym clothing
  • Optional: boxing gloves, hand wraps, and pads (not required for beginners)

Beyond Fitness

Muay Thai is more than exercise. It's a practice that develops:

  • Awareness - Reading opponents and situations
  • Timing - Knowing when to act
  • Composure - Staying calm under pressure
  • Humility - Everyone gets hit; everyone learns

These qualities serve builders well beyond the gym.
